OEM Land Rover Alternators & Generators
Land Rover Alternators FAQ
What are They?
Primary parts of the charging systems in the brand's SUVs. Without one, yours wouldn't run at all.
What Do They Do?
Turn mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is how the car battery charges. It's also how other electrical systems run -- everything from the dash lights and displays, power windows, and car radio to the power steering and windshield wipers.
How Do They Work?
It's a process, one that starts with the engine. The engine runs serpentine and drive belts, which move a pulley. The pulley turns a rotor shaft, and the shaft spins a set of magnetic coils. The movement of the coils creates a magnetic field -- in other words, electricity. A rectifier on the alternator transforms it from AC current into DC current. This charge, a voltage regulator manages.
Why Do They Fail?
Usually, one of four reasons: damaged or degraded parts, a belt that's too tight, a bad jump-start, or an incorrect accessory install. Failure often happens without warning, too, but there are symptoms to suggest one is going out.
What are The Signs of a Bad One?
- Battery and alternator warning lights on the dashboard
- Lighting malfunctions
- Electronics working intermittently
- Fluid leaking from the alternator
- A squeaky engine
- A dead battery
- A burning smell near the battery or alternator, under the hood
If you see any, inspect the alternator. Then, test the charging system overall. Replace the alternator if the results require it.
When Do You Change One Otherwise?
Every 7 years or every 80,000 to 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The maintenance schedule in your owner's manual will have more info and instructions. However, be sure that, when you do buy a new one, it's genuine.
Why Buy a Genuine Land Rover Alternator?
What your brand manufactures for its SUVs is guaranteed to fit them. It follows that one will fit yours.
