Car Radiators 101: Everything You Need to Know

What They Do

Radiators help "sink" or reduce the effects of the heat generated as engines run. This helps to keep the latter from overheating.

How One Works

It's a process that starts with coolant (antifreeze) and ends with an engine working better and lasting longer.

First, the coolant absorbs the above-mentioned heat. It does so by flowing back and forth between an inlet and outlet through radiator hoses (with help from a water pump). As the liquid travels, a radiator cap compresses it, helping it take on maximum heat. A set of radiator core fins then expel the accumulated heat, after which a cooling fan disperses it into the air nearby.

When a radiator goes bad, however, it almost invariably causes problems -- everything from car heating and air conditioning malfunctions to the eponymous engine overheats, even complete engine failure. The signs are telltale, though -- relatively easy to spot.

The Symptoms of a Failing One

They include:

  • Damage to the fins
  • Unusual engine noises
  • Coolant turning to sludge
  • A sweet, syrupy smell -- ethylene glycol, which usually indicates a coolant leak

What to Do About Radiator Failure

Take a look at your vehicle's temperature gauge to see if the engine's running hot. Then, do a complete inspection. If the results indicate that replacing your radiator is necessary, avoid the aftermarket; install the genuine article.

Why Buy Genuine OEM?

Land Rover manufactures radiators for its models specifically. It follows that one will fit yours perfectly. The aftermarket can't always claim the same.
