Engine Parts FAQs
What are the main ones? A block, cylinder head, and cylinders.
What others are there? Almost every cylinder has a piston, and every engine has valves, a valve cover, spark plugs, and an oil pan (or sump), among other parts, like a camshaft and crankshaft.
What does each one do? It's straightforward.
The valves, valve covers, and cylinder head (located on top of the block) seal the engine.
Valves are of two types: intake and exhaust; the former regulates the ratio of air to fuel the engine burns for power, and the latter regulates the fume levels inside the engine.
Valve covers protect valves, the cylinder head keeps gas and oil from escaping, and the camshaft coordinates the activity of the valves.
Engine pistons compress that mix of gas and oxygen as they pump, making more potential energy available.
Spark plugs ignite that mix initially, and it combusts, producing power; the crankshaft turns that power into rotational motion. A drive shaft and transmission use that motion to turn the vehicle's wheels and spin its tires.
The oil pan or sump stores oil for lubrication.
Many other parts -- everything from gears and sprockets to rings and bearings -- make everything fit together correctly.
What happens when any of them wear out and go bad? Engine problems almost invariably follow.
What are the signs of trouble? Acceleration and idling issues, worsening fuel efficiency, stalling, and a vehicle potentially not even starting at all. See any of these, and repairs may be necessary. Luckily, our auto parts store has the best parts for the job: genuine ones.
Why buy genuine OEM engine parts? They're manufactured by Land Rover, ensuring they'll work with the SUV model you drive.
