Automotive Lighting 101: Everything You Need to Know

What Kinds There are

Land Rover SUVs come from the factory with all sorts. The commonest are headlights, daytime running lights ("DRLs", for short), and taillights. Not so common are fog lights and specialty lights. Whatever lighting your model has, though, it usually has more than one use.

What Each Does

Headlights can function as both low-beams and high-beams, illuminating the way during most driving and when it's extremely dark, respectively. You can also use them as hazard lights or "flashers," warning other drivers of danger nearby or telling them you need help. DRLs and tail lighting, however, tell them both where and how far away you are. Your turn signals or "blinkers" indicate a turn or lane change, while your brake lights inform of slowdowns and stops.

Depending on the Land Rover model you drive, you may have other types of lighting, like fog or specialty lighting. The former shines low and brightly in bad weather, while the latter accents exterior accessories such as license plate frames.

Headlamp or tail lamp, the light bulb itself will be one of three kinds.

Bulb Types

Halogen bulbs, you'll find in most smaller vehicles. Xenon or high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, you'll find in many sports cars and performance SUVs. LED bulbs, you'll find in newer vehicles.

When to Change Them

Replace Xenon lights every few years, if or when they dim. Replace LED lights if their electronics fail or the lights themselves burn out. Replace halogen lights every two years or so.
