Control Arms FAQs

What are they? Parts of the front suspension in a vehicle, and some of the most important. They're also called "A arms."

Some models have four -- two lower, two upper. They connect the vehicle's frame or body to its wheel assembly or steering knuckle. A ball joint attaches their outer ends, sometimes permanently, sometimes simply pressed or bolted in. This setup lets you replace the joint if you ever have to. Rubber bushings enable the arms to swing vertically when the vehicle's front wheels and tires go over bumps, potholes, and other road hazards.

What do they do? Put simply, they make sure you can steer properly by keeping your front wheels contacting the road the way they're supposed to.

What are the signs they're going bad? Look for bending and general damage, listen for pops or clunks during driving, and feel for loss of control and brake drift across uneven terrain. These are symptoms of degraded ball joints or torn control arm bushings. Both can cause the complete separation of the front wheels from the suspension.

See such signs, and you should lift your Land Rover on a hoist and inspect it. Do this once annually. If you need to replace any control arms, be sure to buy the genuine article.
