Headlights: What You Need to Know

Generally, headlighting has low-beam and high-beam functions. The former is used to light the way during normal, everyday driving. The latter is used in extreme darkness when there's no oncoming traffic, as it shines wider, illuminating both the road and your surroundings.

It also works as hazard lights or flashers. These can signal other drivers that you're in distress or inform them of problems or dangerous situations nearby. Some models' higher trim levels even have fog lights -- a form of low-glare headlighting designed to brighten the driving environment when the weather's bad.

Whatever headlights your Land Rover has, their bulbs are one of three types: halogen, Xenon (also called high-intensity discharge or HID), and LED. Halogen headlights are commonest, while Xenon headlights, you usually find in models with narrower housings. LED headlights, you can find in many newer models; they're both energy-efficient and low-heat. Halogen lights, you replace every couple of years or so, while HID bulbs get changed about every three years (as they weaken). LED bulbs, on the other hand, you replace if their electronics quit working or the bulbs themselves burn out.
